Audio Transcriber - Clinical Conversation Data

Overview

We are hiring detail-oriented audio transcribers to produce high-accuracy human transcripts of recorded clinical conversations. These transcripts are used as reference data for evaluating and improving speech recognition systems, so accuracy matters far more than speed.

What you will do

• Work through short audio segments, roughly 30 to 45 seconds each, in our annotation platform.

• Each segment arrives with a machine-generated draft transcript. Your job is to correct it against the audio, not to accept it. Machine drafts are often wrong on exactly the words that matter most.

• Apply our transcription specification precisely:

  • Verbatim capture. Filler words, false starts, repetitions and self-corrections are kept, not cleaned up.

  • Speaker labels on every turn.

  • Word-level timing, corrected wherever the draft has drifted.

  • Vocal and linguistic artifact tagging, such as laughter, coughing, crosstalk and inaudible passages, using a supplied tag vocabulary.

• Flag any medical term you are not confident about instead of guessing. A clinical specialist reviews everything flagged, so flagging is expected and encouraged rather than held against you.

What we are looking for

• Native or near-native English listening comprehension, including across a range of accents.

• Prior transcription, captioning, subtitling or audio annotation experience strongly preferred.

• Comfort with detailed written specifications and consistent formatting conventions. Consistency between transcribers is the single biggest quality factor on this work.

• Familiarity with medical terminology is a plus but not required. The flagging workflow above exists so that it is not.

• A quiet working environment and over-ear headphones. Laptop speakers are not sufficient for this audio.

Contract and Payment Terms

• You will be engaged as an independent contractor.
• This is a fully remote role that can be completed on your own schedule.
• Projects can be extended, shortened, or concluded early depending on needs and performance.
• Your work at Mercor will not involve access to confidential or proprietary information from any employer, client, or institution.
• Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise based on services rendered.
